Nuisance Or Necessity?
November 8, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 27:14-17
He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself. Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

The day you’ve had has been exhausting. You set the alarm and lay your head down for some much-needed rest. Sleep comes so easily as you drift off. Then, in what feels like only moments, the alarm clock goes off. You reach over and slap the snooze button, but it seems as soon as you draw your hand back, it goes off again. Your body is crying for a bit more rest when yet again, this mechanical marvel of technology bellows out for you to rise. Now, before you get too angry at this inanimate object, remember, you set it to do just what it has done. Still, there is that urge to smash it into a million pieces.

What Solomon is trying to tell us in today’s passage is that we need to be careful not only about what we say, but also when, where, and how often we say it. He likens the repetitious and annoying nature of some comments to the persistent dripping of rain. He goes on to say that trying to hide the fact that someone is bothering you is like trying to hide the wind, or not letting someone smell perfume you have just placed on your hand.

He then balances these statements with the truth of how a good friend is especially important. This person is not a nagger or bragger, but an incredibly good friend who lovingly causes us to reflect on our life. Real friends will always help us grow.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

As God opens opportunities for us to influence the lives of others, let’s be sure we are doing so in a way that is pleasing to Him. Always sharing a ounce of truth, mingled with a heart filled with love. Not being a nuisance, but rather a friend who is needed.

Are we often more of a nuisance or necessity to our friends?

Can You Pay If They Don’t?
November 7, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 27:11-13
My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me. A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished. Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

If you are warned once by a credible source that something is wrong, that should be enough. However, when God says it twice or more, you definitely need to take notice. That is what we see here as God, through Solomon, repeats His warning from chapter 20:16.

Getting free from our own personal debt is not the only thing in which Christians find themselves bound. Often, to help a family member or close friend, we will sign our name for them to get a loan. We need to understand that God is not against us helping one another. Even co-signing a loan in and of itself is not wrong. However, we must keep in mind…

● It becomes wrong if you cannot pay the debt if they don’t. You have then lied to the lending firm, saying that you could.

● It becomes wrong if paying that debt would put a strain on your own family. You have now bound others into your agreement and caused them hardship as well.

● It’s wrong if you are providing a way of escape for someone whom God is trying to teach a lesson by allowing him or her to be in this financial situation.

So, what should you do now if you have done one of these things? Do all you can to get out of that contract. Watch the debtor like a hawk. Continually ask and monitor if they have paid that debt. If you ask long enough, they will find someone else to replace your name, and most likely, never ask you again!

Debt, in and of itself, is not always wrong. Even the children of Israel had debt. We know that because every seven years, they were to pay it off. It is unsecured debt that we cannot cover that becomes the problem.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Our sin is an example of unsecured debt. It is a debt owed for which we cannot pay. We do not have the ability to pay that debt. The good news is, someone co-signed our bill and, with His mercy and grace, then paid it off. His name is Jesus.

How would you go about helping a friend in debt?

I Have Too Much
November 6, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 27:7-10
The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place. Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel. Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

“I am so full I cannot eat another thing.” Everyone has heard, or probably said this before. You have had so much that if you eat just one more bite, you think you will explode. Nothing even looks good anymore. In today’s passage, Solomon is using this idea to convey some important truths to his son.

The full soul, the affluent, those who have need of little in this world, will often also be wasteful. Having so much, they forget what it was like to hunger, thirst, or need help in any way. Sadly, they also often forget what it is like to be grateful for the love and help of a friend. However, to the hungry, the needy, or those who from time to time still need a friend to help, every little thing seems to be a great gesture of love. Even the counsel of a good friend is seen as an act of genuine care.

As a result, those who have so much of this world’s material goods will commonly not see the need for God, salvation, Jesus, or the church. They begin to trust that they have all they will ever need in their earthly possession. While the less affluent of this world often look to the hand of God to supply their every need and rejoice in His smallest of blessings.

The wealthy in this world may have all their earthly possessions, but they frequently miss out on the blessings of God as He showers His love on those who genuinely believe.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Are all wealthy people like that? Well, think for a moment about who wrote this. It was Solomon, one of the wealthiest men to walk the earth. It truly is not a matter of our pocketbook; it is all about our heart. We must never forget that, no matter how much or how little we have, God sustains and supplies our every need
.

Are you truly weathy in ways
the world may not see?

Tell Me The Truth, “IN LOVE”
November 5, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 27:4-6
Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

There is nothing worse for a person’s emotions than to find out that someone they thought of as a friend, co-laborer, and helper has turned on them and is telling damaging things about them to others. God sometimes refers to such people as gossips, backbiters, or slanderers.

Open rebuke or faithful wounds given in love toward someone should be taken in love. If someone comes to help you by sharing an area they may see in your life as harmful to your testimony or walk with God, and they do it in a loving manner, we ought to accept it and see what God’s Word says about the matter.

On the other hand, if a person comes and tells you how much they love you but will not tell you if they see trouble in your life, can they truly say they love you? The answer is NO! Even worse, if they tell you they love you and then gossip about your faults behind your back, can they say they love you? NO!

God’s Word never hides the truth. It is there for us to read and understand. God never talks behind our back or lets us think it is okay to sin. However, He always says so in the context of love. Always wanting the best for us, He tries to warn us of the cost of sin. Can He say He really loves us? YES!

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Avoid false love, as you do not need the aggravation in your life. Draw close to true love. God’s best love was displayed by sending His Son Jesus to live and die for us. The truth might hurt at times, but the truth wrapped in love will be the best thing you can find. Jesus is the Way, the TRUTH, and Life.

Do you have a real friend who will
tell you the truth in a loving manner?
