What About The Goodman?
March 25, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 7:18-20
Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

Okay, today I will pose a simple question, one you could even ask your four-year-old, and they’d likely get it right. So, here’s the question: What is the opposite of good? Your answers may vary a bit. Some might say evil, others may use the word bad, and some might just get down to basics and simply say “not good.” However you look at it, the opposite of good is usually something with which we don’t want our name associated.

Now, let’s turn to our verses for today. What does the temptress call the man of the house? Referring to her husband, she says the “goodman” of the house is gone. This man should rightfully be in her bed. The goodman seems to be an honest man, working to support his family. He’s an upright man with nothing to hide, nor does he try to deceive her, as he must trust her. Being respectful of his wife, he even lets her know when she might expect him home. She says, “at the day appointed.”

If he, by definition, is the goodman, then what, by the same definition, would this make someone who falls for her temptation? You or your four-year-old have already answered that question. It would make them the evil, bad, or simply not good person. If you ask those who have fallen into the trap of sexual sin, they will tell you that this is exactly how they felt after committing this sin. Dirty, filthy, ashamed, and regretful are all words I’ve heard used to describe such feelings. Simply put, they felt like not-so-good people.

So, how can you avoid feeling this way? Be the Goodman or Goodwoman to someone else faithfully.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

The grace of God is sufficient to cleanse and forgive us from all sin. However, the memory of sins committed lingers. It’s wonderful to know we are forgiven, but it’s even better not to need forgiveness.

Will you strive to be a good person before God?

A Tempting Scent
March 22, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 7:15-17
Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

“Can you smell it?” The scent of a hot apple pie fresh from the oven. The aroma of a spring day just after a rain. Clothes that have just come in off the line with the crisp scent of a gentle breeze. So many things can bring about a wonderful sense of joy through a simple aroma.

We are often influenced by the sense of smell. Perfume manufacturers understand this and spend thousands of dollars testing and blending different oils and spices to create a fragrance that will appeal to the masses. Not only does scent attract us, but it can also serve as a warning of danger in the vicinity. Natural gas companies add a strong odor to the gas they pump into homes to alert people to a potential leak in the line. Skunks emit a foul smell when they feel threatened and in danger. The odor of a skunk is often so pungent that it can make you sick when you encounter it.

Smells, even unpleasant ones, can sometimes tempt us. I used to be a three-pack-a-day cigarette smoker. At the time of writing this, I have not smoked for well over 30 years. Most of the time, the smell of tobacco on someone’s clothes is unpleasant to me. However, occasionally, the scent of cigarette smoke can trigger memories. Why? Because it brings back thoughts of something I enjoyed for many years. I thank God I’ve never given in to the temptation. The freedom from that addiction that I enjoy today far outweighs any momentary pleasure a cigarette could ever bring me. Yet, the temptations are there, nonetheless.

So how does Satan tempt us? The answer is simple: he will tempt us in any way he can!

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

1 Peter 5:8 says: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” I have found one of the best ways to guard against temptation is to keep my focus on Jesus.

What will you focus on today?

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 7:11-14
(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

Yak, yak, yak, when will they ever shut up? I am sure there are some people who feel that way during the sermons on Sunday. Some people just love to hear their own voice.

In today’s verses, Solomon describes the temperament and character of a woman who is tempting a young man. She is described as loud and stubborn. The difference between merely liking to talk (and perhaps being good at it) and her nature is her evident stubbornness. I am sure we have all encountered such people, both women and men, who won’t listen to reason regardless of the advice they are given. They are determined to do whatever they’ve set their minds on.

One of the issues in society today is people trying to be something other than what God intended for them. This woman wasn’t content with just being a wife. As Solomon says in verse 11, “…her feet abide not in her house.”

Not only do we see that this woman is stubborn, but she is also deceitful. Solomon mentions that she’s without; her husband is gone, and she is out parading around as if she were single again. Next, we find her “in the streets.” In today’s terms, you might say she is out shopping. She appears to be everywhere except where God intended her to be.

I know some might be saying, “Wait a minute, are you saying there is something wrong with shopping?” NO! That is, unless you’re shopping for something God says you are not supposed to have. This woman would not listen to reason. She was shopping for sin. Furthermore, she kept shopping until she caught someone and lured him into her sinful trap. This would have never happened if she had been content with what God had given her.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

God has created for us a meaningful life, and desires to fulfill it in us. Philippians 2:13 “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Who are we to mess up God’s plans? Live for Jesus as He lives in you.

What is God’s perfect plan for your life?

What Do Your Clothes Say About You?
March 20, 2024

DAILY PROVERB:

Proverbs 7:8-10
Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtle of heart.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

“Clothes don’t make a man; a man makes the clothes.” Most everyone has heard this comment or a statement similar to it. However, is it true? Not always.

If I describe a man dressed in black leather pants, a t-shirt, a black leather jacket, thick-soled boots, and a helmet, what comes to your mind? Be quick now, no fair thinking about it. Most of you probably said biker. Now, how about this: a man or woman in a finely pressed uniform with a badge above their heart. They have with them a flat saucer hat with a small badge above the bill of it. Around their waist is a holster with a pistol snapped shut on one side, and handcuffs on the other. Whom do you picture now? Most of us would say a law enforcement officer.

What you wear does matter, whether you want to believe it or not. People get a mental picture of the type of person you are just by your appearance. You might say, “That is not fair,” and maybe it is not. Nevertheless, you have just proved to yourself, fair or not, it is true.

In today’s verses, Solomon tells his son about a certain type of woman. The first description of her is the way she is dressed. He describes her attire as that of a harlot. He never tells us what this attire might be, and yet, each of us pictured in our mind what we think this attire might be. Fair or not, we did.

How people perceive us on first impression is important, and it’s our choice. We can be comfortable in today’s fashion, yet modest in our apparel and appearance.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Some of you might be saying, “What people think doesn’t matter.” Yet, God’s Word tells us we are to be a witness for Him in everything we do, including our testimony through appearance. Before going out today, stop in front of your mirror. What are people looking at? My prayer is that they see all of you as an example for Christ.

Can’t we all have our own taste, flare, and style,
while still being pleasing to GOD?
