What Did You Come For?
SEPTEMBER 9, 2026
Daily Reading—Pro. 6-7 / 1 Co. 13
WHAT GOD HAS SAID:
1 Corinthians 11:17-18 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
WHAT I HAVE SEEN:
I heard a story of a man and his wife talking on their ride home from church. The wife said to her husband, “Did you see Miss Margaret’s new hat?” The husband replied, “Uh, no, I guess I missed it.” She said, “Oh, well, did you see Mr. Bill’s new suit?” He again replied, “Well, no, I guess I missed that too.” She turned and sternly said, “What do you even go to church for?”
The sad truth is that many people go to church for the wrong reasons. Some go to gawk at others, some to gossip with others, and some to grumble about others. Paul addresses this in 1 Cor. 11:17-18. He said if you go for the wrong reason, “I praise you not.” Going for the wrong reasons will cause divisions, not delight.
WHAT WILL YOU DO:
For what reason do you go to church?
IF YOU ARE JOURNALING:
Ask yourself, what are MY THOUGHTS concerning this passage and today’s devotion?
Within this reading, do I find a CHALLENGE for my life?
What actions will I take today or this week to meet this CHALLENGE?
