There Is Always A Critic
MAY 22, 2026
Daily Reading—1 Kings 11-12 / John 6:34-71
WHAT GOD HAS SAID:
John 5:9-10 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
WHAT I HAVE SEEN:
If you knew someone who had a crippling illness for 38 years and then was made well, what would be your first comment to them? Would you criticize the crumpled clothes they wore? Point out that they might want to shave and comb their hair? No, you would most likely be overjoyed that they were healed. Yet this is what was happening in today’s text, and the first thing he is confronted with is, “You are breaking a rule.”
Too often, we, as believers, have become so rule-oriented that we miss the blessings of God in people’s lives. Instead of taking some time to rejoice with them, we immediately tell them what they need to do next. While we may think we are helping, we are at the same time missing all the joy of the moment.
WHAT WILL YOU DO:
Shouldn’t we just enjoy God’s blessing with others first?
IF YOU ARE JOURNALING:
Ask yourself, what are MY THOUGHTS concerning this passage and today’s devotion?
Within this reading, do I find a CHALLENGE for my life?
What actions will I take today or this week to meet this CHALLENGE?
