The Heart Of The Matter

January 23
Daily Reading – Genesis 46-48 / Matthew 15:1-20

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

There’s a lot of showiness in many churches today. I’m not saying it’s all bad or carnal. However, I’m not saying it’s all God honoring either. You can put on a great production, have it all sound good, even call the name of Jesus from time to time, and yet not honor God. Worship is not about the professionalism of the show; worship is about the purpose of the heart.

This week many who read this will attend what’s called a Worship Service. However we must remember, worship is not about how well you sing or how many times you say amen. For it to be a genuine worship service you need to draw near to God with your heart.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

How can your worship of God today
prepare you to better worship God this Sunday?

Someone’s Listening

January 22
Daily Reading – Genesis 44-45 / Matthew 14

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Think back to when something special happen in your life. What did you want to do? You wanted to tell the most important person in your life all about it. As I read today’s verse, I see Jesus doing the same thing. He sent the disciples and the multitudes away and went alone to have a wonderful conversation with His Father. That conversation is one I would love to have heard as He thanked God, His Father and best friend, for blessing not only the food, but also the whole day.

Today, God will be involved in your life. He will most likely do some awesome things if we will ask Him to and then just watch for it.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

Who is the most important person in your life
with whom you’ll want to share this with?
Someone’s listening you know!

Honor God

January 21
Daily Reading – Genesis 42-43 / Matthew 13:36-58

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 13:57-58 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Many have read today’s verses and seen that Jesus wasn’t honored in His own country. Many pastors look for ministries away from where they grew up for this very reason. However, read it again. Not only was He not honored in His own country, but also in His own house. It may have been they were too familiar with Jesus to see what God wanted to do through Him.

Many today have walked away from God’s House, the church, and fellowship. They feel they’ve heard it, seen it, and don’t really need any more. However, could it be that in doing so they are not honoring Jesus again in His own House? He just might use them if they would stay.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

What might He do in our midst if we would
stay in awe of Him and all He can do?

See It? Hear It? Get It?

January 20
Daily Reading – Genesis 40-41 / Matthew 13:1-35

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Some have read this verse in the New Testament and felt Jesus purposefully was trying to keep Salvation as secret from those around. However if you look at Jesus’ own explanation it was not the story that was the problem, it was the heart of the hearer. Those around him had the scrolls, the scripture of that time and yet were not willing to listen or see what Jesus was teaching. They had grown cold to the truth. Their heart it says had waxed gross, or unreceptive.

Today in America and in most parts of the world the teachings of the Bible are readily available, yet people are unreceptive. It’s not that the Word of God is not taught, It’s that people will not see or hear the truth.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

  How can we help people
see it, hear it, and Get it?

January 19
Daily Reading – Genesis 38-39 / Matthew 12:33-50

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 12:36-37 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Way too often, I’ve heard people make excuses for what they listen to by the way of music, or watch on TV and movies, or read in literature. They make claims such as, “it’s just a movie, it’s just a song, or it’s just a book.” However, the truth is that whatever we allow in our hearts and minds will in some way show up in our lives and eventually come out of our mouth.

Computer geek programmers have a term they use, “GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT.” It means if you want good results out of your program you have to put good programming in. Your brain is the most high-powered computer ever designed. One day you will give an account for every word programmed into it.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

What are you going to allow
to be put into your mind today?

With A Tender Touch

January 18
Daily Reading – Genesis 37 / Matthew 12:15-32

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Have you ever heard the phrase, “You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar?” Solomon said it this way in Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. This is the principle Jesus used in His ministry as well. One rough touch on a bruised reed will break it. Smoking flax was the wick of a lamp when it had no more oil and the embers of a flame could be snuffed out if handled wrong. Jesus, with tender love and skill would uplift the broken and weak and kindle a flame with the oil of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s be gentle with the tender hearts, the bruised life, and a flame barely burning that is brought our way.

What soft word or kind gesture might we share
to give people a new, real life?

It’s Not About The Dwelling

January 17
Daily Reading – Genesis 35-36 / Matthew 12:1-14

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

As Pastor, I am grateful for the place God provided for our Church to meet. However, at times I’ve almost been scolded for saying the building is a building, and the Church fills it. Don’t get me wrong, I think we should respect and treat with care God’s House where we meet. However, when all is said and done, its wood, brick, shingles, and siding.

Jesus made a similar statement in Matthew 12:6. It’s not about the dwelling, it’s about the dweller. A building without God’s saved people is not a church. Just as a person without Christ in their heart is not a Christian.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

Real Rest

January 16
Daily Reading – Genesis 33-34 / Matthew 11:20-30

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

It was very possible that Christ was speaking to the Jewish people who had been oppressed by the ceremonial and ritualistic laws of their religion. He was saying to them, embrace me as your Saviour, and rest from these burdensome legalistic manmade laws.

At the same time, He is telling us the same thing. Many have searched for a truth in life and tried to find it in work, wealth, worldliness, and whatever might fill that emptiness inside. In John 14:6, it says Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Once you find Jesus’ way is the truth of life you can rest from the constant search.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

Will it be His way of rest or yours of worry?

Healing For The Soul

January 15
Daily Reading – Genesis 31-32 / Matthew 11:1-19

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 11:4-5 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

We’re very concerned with our physical bodies these days. At this time of year, people make promises to themselves to eat right for better health, to exercise for longer life and try to take care of ourselves.

When Jesus was telling Johns disciples to share the miracles they saw, He included sight, illness, hearing, walking, and life as important to man. Then He added in the same list of importance, “the poor have the gospel preached to them.” The Gospel brings health to the soul of man. Today, more than anything we need this healing of the soul. It’s a miracle available today to all who will believe.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

Will you help work a miracle today
by sharing this healing Gospel?

It’s A War Of Wills

January 14
Daily Reading – Genesis 29-30 / Matthew 10

WHAT GOD HAS SAID:

Matthew 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

WHAT I HAVE SEEN:

Over the years as I have read today’s verse, I saw a positive and negative. If you try to hold on to life, you lose all the benefits of following Christ. If you give up your hold on life, you find joy in this life and the life to come. I still believe this to be true. However, today as I read this verse I saw another way of reading it.

As I read, “He that findeth his life shall lose it:” I thought of a man who had found in his life that earthly holdings are futile. Fame, riches, pleasures all pass away. Therefore, he decides to give his life to God. So then when it says, “he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” could be talking about the same guy. Either way you read this it still says, to enjoy this life and eternity we must surrender our life to God’s will.

WHAT DO YOU SAY:

What hold on life might you surrender today?
